OVERVIEW

Commitment to Excellence was founded in 2009 to establish results-oriented mentoring, cultural, health and social programs that have a positive impact on the youth and young adults of our community.  Since then, CTE has touched hundreds of students, provided numerous merit and need-based scholarships, aided families, and funded like-minded organizations whose overall mission and goals align with Commitment to Excellence.

MISSION

Our Mission

Commitment to Excellence supports programs and activities that enhance the lives of children and families in the Metropolitan Atlanta area principally through mentorship and scholarship.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN

Dr. Marc Harrigan, MD

Chairman of the Board

The past several months have been painful to say the least. The loss of Black men and women at the hands of hatred and police brutality have shaken the core of our collective consciousness. Jogging, sleeping, bird watching, and even breathing – normal everyday actions have all come into question for Blacks in America. As an organization rooted in uplifting African American communities and bettering the lives of families especially children, we deplore all acts of violence targeting our community and equally deplore any retaliatory violence.

Coupled with this unrest, we continue to suffer through a global pandemic which has hit our community harder than most. We all grapple with how our lives are changing and how life in general will ultimately differ in the future. Like most organizations and businesses, Commitment to Excellence has been forced to retool and revisit how we can continue to best serve the community – particularly our young Black males. Know that we are exploring creative ways to continue providing mentorship, partnership, and scholarship activities to the Atlanta communities we serve with limited resources as our primary fundraiser and signature event, Sundresses & Seersuckers, was cancelled this year due to the pandemic. We hope that you will continue to support with us and consider donating to our scholarship and mentoring programs this year so we may continue the great work of Commitment to Excellence and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. We look forward to seeing you next

year’s event on May 20-22, 2021.

As we forge ahead through the pandemic, social unrest, and long-standing economic disparities, we recommit ourselves as an organization to uplift and excellence.

Sincerely,

Marc Harrigan, MD

Chairman of the Board

OUR PRIORITIES

Our Priorities

Statistics show that African American children, particularly males, are more likely to fall through the cracks during their most critical formative years without access to information, activities and role models that provide regular opportunities to learn while igniting a fire to dream big, to aspire, to be the best they can be.

At Commitment to Excellence, we believe that adverse life experiences, low income, and economic disadvantage should not be a deterrent to exposure, access, learning or growth. We believe these inherent opportunities should be woven into the cultural fabric of life for all children.

Leadership . . .

“It is easier to build strong children than it is to repair broken men"

-Frederick Douglas

First-hand exchanges with accomplished leaders from a variety of industries provide positive examples for impressionable young students. With each opportunity and encouragement to grow their skills in a healthy, productive, and appropriate direction, students can become the good, effective leaders that our world needs.

Scholarship . . .

“A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special."

-Nelson Mandela

Investing in education is a gift with immeasurable reward when it makes attending college an achievable option for a deserving student. Encouraging students to explore coursework in STEM, the arts, and entrepreneurship will prepare them for desirable jobs and ultimately more fruitful careers in the future.Mentoring improves attendance, academic achievement classroom behaviors, life skills and self-efficacy.

Social Action . . .

“Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve”

-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.·

Community service or volunteerism enables students to acquire life skills and knowledge while providing a service to those who need it most. While effectively preventing a variety of problems such as alcohol and drug use, violence, truancy, and bullying, social skills learning promotes students’ academic success, health, and overall well-being. The development of life skills helps students to find new ways of critical thinking and problem solving in everyday life.
